Florian Schmidt

Director

Florian has been active in Asia’s debt capital markets since 1993, having worked for Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Bank of America, ING and SC Lowy.

He has transacted hundreds of financings across the product suite, investment-grade and high-yield, public and private, G3 and local currencies as well as special situations, including debt restructurings.

He used to advise the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on capital market access and development in the 1990s and has been acting as advisor to the Government of Mongolia since 2017. In that capacity he was involved in discussions with the IMF and helped to design and successfully execute all liability management transactions and new issues since 2017. Mongolia won the “Best Sovereign Borrower Award” by Finance Asia in 2017, 2020 and, again, in 2021.

During his debt capital markets career Florian also transacted numerous award-winning high-yield bonds for Asian debut issuers such as Bukit Makmur Mandiri Utama and Indika Energy (both Indonesia), eAccess (Japan), Mongolian Mining Corp. as well as Vingroup (Vietnam).

Debt restructuring expertise encompassed opportunistic liability management exercises as well as distressed exchanges and solutions for regional issuers during and after the Asian and Global Financial Crises, some of which award-winning: an example was Mongolian Mining Corp’s restructuring of senior notes, loan facilities and promissory notes in 2017, the first of its kind from Mongolia.

Florian holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Münster and is the author of several capital markets-related books, including the acclaimed “A Guide to Asian High Yield Bonds”, published in 2014.
